The industrial scenario in Orissa is all set to undergo a significant transformation with the spurt of new ventures coming up in the State. The Orissa Government is offering every support needed to let these projects accelerate economic activities for the benefit of the people. When about two decades earlier, Kalinganagar had been an area retired from mainstream industrial activities, today it is the destination for several companies of domestic and international repute. Some of the steel projects commissioned or proposed at the Kalinganagar Industrial Complex have been discussed below.

 

MESCO Steel Group – The MESCO Kalinga Steel plant at Kalinganagar is operational and produces 7.0 MTPA of flat and long product. The product range includes hot rolled coils, wire rods, bars and light sections. A project to manufacture DRI and Billets is under implementation. The group also operates a large mine in Sundergarh district, Orissa on lease.

 

VISA Steel Ltd. – VISA Steel is implementing a 2.5 million TPA Special and Stainless Steel Plant and 325 MW Power Plant at Kalinganagar Industrial Complex in Orissa.

 

Tata Steel Ltd. – The MoU between the Government of Orissa and Tata Steel was signed in November 2004. As per the MoU, the Company will set up a 6 mtpa integrated steel plant in two phases of 3 mtpa each. While, equipment consignments for the project have started arriving, actual construction work will only start after completion of the rehabilitation and resettlement process. Tata Steel’s main focus at the moment is to ensure every benefit for the project-affected families by providing them with better living conditions and a better quality of life.

 

JSL Ltd. – Jindal Stainless is setting up a greenfield integrated Stainless Steel project in Orissa. The project involves mining of Iron, Manganese & Chrome ore for production of ferroalloys and stainless steel in the melt shop and rolling mills. A captive power plant of 500 MW capacity will be set up to meet the requirement of the manufacturing facility. This stainless steel plant will ultimately have a capacity of 1.6 million tonnes per annum.

 

Nilachal Ispat Nigam Ltd. – It is the only public sector steel unit operating at the Kalinganagar Industrial Complex. NINL is promoted by MMTC Limited & IPICOL (Orissa). It has set up a 1.1 million tonne Integrated Iron and steel plant at Kalinganagar. Presently in Phase I, the main products are pig iron and LAM coke along with nut coke, coke breeze, crude tar, ammonium sulphate and granulated slag. NINL has its own captive power plant.

 

JSL Stainless Steel Park - JSL Limited has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Orissa government for setting up a stainless steel park at Kalinganagar Industrial Estate. The proposed project will accommodate 71 units, including a service centre at Kalinganagar. This would be an extension to its 1.6 MTPA Integrated Stainless Steel project, as these units will use the finished products from the JSL plant.
